The college is celebrating its Silver Jubilee, the journey of glorious twenty five years of academic excellence and the social responsibilities. The college seeks to impart value based education and nurture young minds through maintaining a holistic and congenial academic atmosphere.
The scintillating natural scenario and amalgamated tribal culture has given the exclusivity to Sonapur College. It has cherished enduring goals of youngsters who sought to engage in the modern competitive scenario of higher education system which has initiated certain changes into the class and caste structures in the social and economic context of education. We have committed faculties and dedicated staff willing to impart their teaching skills and help students in the critical juncture of their life. The college has been accredited by NAAC with B-Grade (CGPA – 2.58) in its Second Cycle of Assessment.
Established on 2nd August, 1991, Sonapur College has been offering B. A. and B. Com. degree courses in 13 major disciplines along with two existing Vocational departments namely Tourism and Travel Management and Information Technology under Gauhati University.
With a view to expand the scope of vocational education at a larger scale, the UGC has granted the prestigious status of the DDU KAUSHAL Kendra to Sonapur College, one amongst the 48 HE institutions across the country and has approved 03 (three) Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc) Programmes, namely Retail Management & IT, Theatre & Stage Craft and Tourism & Travel Management under the Scheme of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Centre for Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood (DDU KAUSHAL) of UGC. These programmes, with the provisions of multiple exits, are introduced from the academic year 2015 -16.
The college has also introduced a UGC funded Certificate course in Human Rights Education recently for the greater benefit of the students. Students can also avail the facility of distance learning under KKHSOU. There are provisions of various schemes and scholarships to the meritorious students coming from economically backward families. We motivate our students to participate in various socio-cultural activities through NCC and NSS units of the college. The Indoor Stadium, Mini Theatre Hall and Computer Lab were successfully inaugurated during the Silver Jubilee Opening Ceremony to encourage the students in co- curricular activities. We also provide hostel accommodation for girl students.
